New steward orientation includes an opportunity to meet with a mentor.
Through the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy Steward Program, we preserve and protect the environment and resources of the preserve for future generations. To join our team, come to one of our monthly New Steward Orientation sessions.
The classroom portion of the New Steward Orientation is held the second Saturday of each month from September to April. There is a $50 charge for this orientation to help offset the cost of providing refreshments, t-shirts, and class materials. The minimum age for MSC volunteers is 18 years old.
This intensive workshop provides important information about the history and background of the Preserve, the relationship between the Conservancy and City of Scottsdale, and the important mission of the Conservancy. In addition, participants are introduced to the trails, trailheads and other features of the Preserve; safety issues, communicating with the public, patrol strategies, how to report trail conditions, contact information, and the wide range of stewardship opportunities.
Participants who complete the class portion of the orientation are assigned a mentor. The mentor helps guide a participant with field orientation sessions and introduction to the variety of stewardship opportunities.
