Hiking in the Preserve
Whether you hike on your own or with a group, visiting the Preserve on foot provides an up-close experience with its treasures.

There are two ways to explore the Preserve: On your own or with a guide. Choose what is right for you. Our About the Preserve pages have maps, regulations, and other information that can help you prepare.

If you are interested in booking a hike for a group, please call us at 480-998-7971 x 100.  After learning more about your interests, we can put something together that meets your specific needs.

Independent Exploration
The Preserve is open from dawn to dusk and during this time, you are welcome to hike, bike, rock climb, or ride horses throughout the Preserve. Maps are available at MSC’s office. If you prefer to hike on your own, we recommend you read the information on our Know Before You Go page of this website.
Guided Exploration
Some people choose to have a facilitated experience in the Preserve. Our guides can point out some of the Preserve's secrets, things you might not notice on your own. Guides will explore every trail and share information about a variety of topics on hikes throughout the year. There's a guided hike for almost every interest and hiking level. We take our time, stop often to talk about what we see, and admire our surroundings.

Join The Team

There is a hike patrol division of our Stewardship program. This volunteer program is critical to the management of the Preserve. Think about joining this team. You are already in the Preserve – why not help care for it? You will only need to take a 2 day training class. Contact us at volunteer@mcdowellsonoran.org or call 480-998-7971 x 105 today.
