The following is a non-inclusive list of the typical duties and activities of the MSC Stewards:
- Patrol areas using trails/roads-frequency depends on level of usage
- Note/report changes in the conditions of the trail system-making suggestions for improvements.
- Observe and report changing conditions of flora and fauna.
- Remove trash or organize a cleanup project.
- Communicate with users regarding:
- Hazards - drinking water, snakes, cacti, impending weather changes, etc.
- Satisfaction/concerns with the Preserve (Trails, Signage, Maps, etc.)
- Sources of information including Preserve rules.
- Lead educational hikes
- Be an advocate for preservation, particularly on issues involving the Preserve.
- Perform minor maintenance on trail system to assure safety and reduce damage/erosion.
- Participate in trail building, cleanup, and other projects.
- Report accidents and incidents.
- Provide training for Assistant Stewards, or coordinate Jr. Steward projects.
